The mornings are starting to feel colder here in Indy, indicating that fall will be making its way here in no time. That’s why it’s the perfect time to start preparing your home for the fall weather to come. Start by following the home maintenance tips below:

Tip 1:

Make sure your home is ready to keep you and your family warm. Have your furnace tuned up by a professional.

Tip 2:

Stop distributing bacteria throughout your home by cleaning your humidifier.

Tip 3:

If your home has them, install storm windows and screens.

Tip 4:

Detach hoses from the hose bibs and empty them. This will help prevent freezing water in outdoor pipes.

Tip 5:

Look for gaps and cracks around the outside of your home. These gaps and cracks could start to cause problems once the weather gets colder. If water enters the gaps and freezes it will expand. When expanding happens masonry and foundation damage can occur. Putting the damage caused by water aside, these gaps are also the perfect place for air to leak out. Leaking air can account for a 20% increase in heating costs. Save yourself the money, run to the store and pick up some caulk and weather stripping to stop the air leak.

Tip 6:

Rotate your fan blades clockwise. Do this by flipping the switch on your ceiling fan; doing this will bring warm air down.

Tip 7:

Prevent water damage inside your home by looking over your roof for loose or missing shingles. This simple tip can prevent you from having to deal with unwanted drywall, electrical, plumbing and heating and cooling problems.

Tip 8:

Prevent a fire by having your fireplace cleaned.

Tip 9:

Change the batteries in your smoke detectors.
