But if you cannot afford a water softener right now, then the next best thing is maintaining one of the most important appliances in your home: your water heater. Water heater maintenance is VERY important for extending the life of your equipment, especially in Indiana. A water heater flush and fill should be performed once every 4-12 months (depending on family size and lifestyle).

The reason why you should perform a flush and fill at least once per year is that sediment from the water accumulates inside your water heater.

A flush and fill maintenance will remove a majority of the sediment buildup. The way this is done is by draining the water from the heater through a what is called the “drain valve.”

The standard port drain valve can make the process of draining slow due to the valve size. If the scale is in the heater there is a possibility that sediment can clog the valve, which makes it difficult to clean out the water heater. But, with a full port valve installation, the heater will have a better flow through its drain.
