Indianapolis lights up this time of year with all of the lights that people put on their homes. It is beautiful to see but can also be frustrating when trying to get these things to work! Lights that only get used once a year and stored in the attic or garage for the rest of the year can be problematic. Here is a list of tips to help make for a smooth installation of your homes Christmas lights this season:
Don’t overload the circuit
Outdoor outlets are typically on a 15-amp circuit, meaning if you put more than 15-amps worth of item’s drawing power on that circuit, then the breaker will do its job and shut off power at the home’s breaker box. This can be frustrating, but it is actually just the home’s electrical system, functioning how it was designed to function. Here is a quick calculator to help you determine how many strands of lights you can put on each circuit in your home.
Protection from the weather
Plugging Christmas lights into an outdoor outlet leaves the outlet more exposed to the elements than normal. One way to keep the outlet connection point more effectively protected from the weather is to replace a traditional weatherproof cover with an updated “bubble cover”. These are available at most local hardware stores. There are also weatherproof connection boxes, like this, that will help keep multiple entry point strands protected. Ultimately, mother nature is undefeated, and these are only helpful measures and not full proof protections.
Use a timer
A properly used timer and can turn power on and off to your Christmas decoration displays so that you aren’t spending money operating them when no one is awake to see them. These are easily installed and can be purchased at most local hardware stores. Here is a quick video showing how easy these are installed.
