What Should You Never Put Down Your Drain?

We’ve seen it all when it comes to holiday plumbing emergencies, and we don’t want you to be the next one calling us with a clogged sink or backed-up drain. Here are some common culprits we recommend keeping out of your drains:

• Egg Shells
  After cracking some eggs for that holiday baking, we know it’s tempting to toss the shells down the disposal. However, egg shells can break into tiny, sharp pieces that combine with grease and other particles, forming tough clogs in your pipes. Instead, toss them in the trash or compost bin!
• Coffee Grounds
  Whether you’re brewing coffee for guests or just trying to stay energized during holiday prep, remember that coffee grounds are no friend to your drains. They don’t dissolve in water and tend to clump up, leading to blockages. A better option? Compost them or throw them in the garbage.
• Grease, Oil, and Fats
  After cooking that holiday roast or frying up some delicious sides, don’t pour grease, oil, or fats down the drain. These substances might seem harmless when warm, but they harden as they cool, sticking to the inside of your pipes and causing major clogs. Let them cool in a container, then dispose of them in the trash.
• Toys and Small Objects
  If you’ve got little ones running around the house during the holidays, be extra careful about keeping toys, ornaments, and other small objects away from sinks or toilets. Accidents happen, but these items can lead to serious plumbing problems.
